Photography is Therapy

Have you ever thought about photography and how it can be therapeutic to you? Speaking from a photographer’s perspective, photography is therapeutic to me (check out my previous blog “Why is Photography Important to Me”). Essentially photography is therapeutic because I can use my right brain aka my creative side while simultaneously serving my community. The outcome of my photography business is far greater than I can ever imagine. Perhaps you’re considering scheduling a session with a photographer in your community. If that’s the case, you should read this blog about why photography is therapy. I hope this will enhance your next photography experience with a photographer near you!

Whether you are celebrating a graduation, new pregnancy, the holiday season or just creating memories after moving to a new location; photography is intrinsically meaningful to you. Often times, we capture memories and beautiful images of our everyday life using our smart phones. Why do we capture these images daily? Many of you would say something like this: “I want to post it on Facebook or Instagram for all of my friends to see” or “I just wanted to capture the moment to savor this memory”. Whatever the motivation, the bottomline is

photography is meaningful to you.


How does capturing an image make you feel? How does being in front of the camera make you feel? What is the emotional outcome of that photo?

All of these questions should be considered when pondering on the thought of “meaning”.

Many photographers like myself, desire our clients to have a plethora of positive emotional thoughts after viewing their gallery. But the question is, how do we exert those same emotions during the session? The answer to that question is preparation.




Why would you need to “prepare” for a session and why is that important?

In this case, preparing doesn’t mean picking the best outfits or choosing the perfect foundation; it’s mental preparation. Mental preparation is essential because your emotions will show in your images. Read about the three ways you can mentally prepare for your next session.

  1. Reflect on why you scheduled the session

    Are you celebrating a life event (engagement, pregnancy or new blended family)? Consider the reason why you are scheduling this session and the impact this will have in your life.

  2. Think about being in front of the camera

    Many people are camera shy or maybe they are insecure about a personal body feature. Although, you cannot change how your nose is positioned or your hairline. You can change your perspective about these features. Positive self-image is vital for any person, whether you are a teenager, middle-aged or elderly. Try to look in the mirror and speak positive thoughts about yourself. You are beautiful the way you are. Some photographers may be able to change the size of your arms or your nose; but ultimately it is important for you to be content with how you look.

  3. Put away any negative thoughts before the session

    Life happens and we get discouraged sometimes. However, prior to your session you should put away all of those negative thoughts and feelings. Think about it, if you continue to have those negative emotions before and during your session, don’t you think those emotions will show up in those images? It may be subtle changes such as a frowned face, lowered eyebrows or clenched teeth. You can “put away” your negative thoughts by practicing deep breathing exercises. Take at least 5 deep breathes prior to leaving for your session and immediately after you get there (before the photographer snaps your pictures). Be sure to arrive at least 10 minutes before your session, so you can have time to do this.


Consider these 3 ways of preparing for your next session. After your photography experience, you will feel comforted, accomplished and relaxed. This is why photography is therapy.
