Photography and Why it is Important to Me

As we near the end of black history month, I want to share with you some things I have reflected on as a photographer. I’ve spent most of the month pondering on black history and photography. I’ve watched several emotional and daring films about individuals who have involuntarily sacrificed themselves emotionally, physically, psychosocially for the greater good of the black community. One of the ways we reflect on those who sacrificed themselves is with photography. If it wasn’t for filmmakers and photographers, we would not have a visual opportunity to glean on the history of America.

Last Saturday, I visited the International Civil Rights Center & Museum in Greensboro, NC with a few of my family members. This was my third visit to the museum. In the beginning of the tour, I viewed a copious amount of photos of black Americans in the 1950’s and 1960’s who shared similar characteristics of painful tears, sadness in their eyes and torn spirits. As we ended the tour, I merrily observed the photos of individuals who possessed joyful smiles during success and victory. It was quite insightful. Due to the substantial power of the photographs of black men and women who suffered for justice, I feel more empowered to capture everyday moments of my life and individuals.

Photography is often taken for granted. Some view photography as a luxury and some underestimate the power of photography. If photography didn’t exist, how would we capture moments in our lives? The good, bad, and the ugly. Initimate moments of your family and friends should be cherished and not taken for granted. Although photography may undervalued to some, it is a vital part of others around the world. I desire to continue my journey as photographer to capture moments of the lives of others so they may feel impassioned while looking back at photos of themselves, family members and friends.
